What to expect from your MCR?

First off, what does MCR mean? It is an abused term, meaning both the members of the common room (IE: PGs), the common room itself, and the committee members. It should be clear from context … should.

The room: the MCR at Queen’s is one of the best spaces for PGs in Oxford. It has a brilliant, quaint, British / Oxford style that is unmistakable. For philosophical discussions, nowhere beats it.

The members: Hopefully your friends and colleagues! Come together for events across term, and find out more about what makes us all tick.

The Committee: in short, we are here to serve the MCR members. If you have a suggestion, either let us know – or better still, sign up for a position and make it happen! The MCR is our shared space, both physical and abstract, and the more that chip in to make it work, the more special it will be for everyone.

Is the MCR ran by college? While being a ‘society’ belonging to the college, and therefore able to access all its benefits, the MCR has a large degree of autonomy. We also have MCR-open meeting which is your chance to add your say and vote on matters, even as a regular member. For more details, you can read the MCR constitution.

Can I only take part in the MCR? There is a lot more in addition to the MCR within college. We strongly suggest you visit https://www.queens.ox.ac.uk/ and navigate the ‘Student Life ‘ tab to see what else college does (eg. music, sports, chapel, etc.). Furthermore you can have a look at our complementary page on this topic.

What to expect from Oxford?

Arguably the most beautiful city in England! We hope you’ll find this splendid place a real home over the course of your degree. Take the time to explore – there really is so much! With so many colleges, each with a unique take on what it means to be in Oxford, the university feels endless. However, outside of the university the city itself is full of resturants, bars, musuems, gardens; the list feels endless.
